Dec 9th: Public Hearings on BHA Section 8 and other Housing Funding Cuts!

Nationwide housing voucher cuts will hurt hundreds of thousands. Including people with HIV/AIDS.

Your Section 8 Voucher and Public Housing Are At Risk!
Together, We Can Fight Back!

Dear BHA Tenant,

Come to Public Hearings called by the BHA on its Public Housing Agency Plan, which the BHA must submit to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban development (HUD) each year. The Hearings will be held on Monday, December 9 at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Copley Square branch of the of the Boston Public Library, in the Commonwealth Salon, and at 6 to 8 p.m. in Room 801 of Boston City Hall.

Last March the US Congress cut funding for Public Housing and the Section 8 Voucher program by 6%! These cuts are part of a much larger attack on programs that aid low income people, adding to growing inequality nationwide. As a result, the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) has been hit hard with a $14 million cut in Section 8 funds this year, as well as cuts to Public Housing.

Unless Congress acts to replace these funds, or the City of Boston makes up the difference, the BHA’s cash reserves will be depleted soon. The BHA could be forced to terminate at least 500 Voucher recipients early next year. Already, the BHA has not leased to new Voucher holders since March 2013, forcing homeless families and individuals desperate for rental assistance to remain longer in shelters, or on the streets.

PolicyBasics-housing-1-25-13RA-f1In addition, Congress is only providing 82% of the funds the BHA needs to operate Public Housing, an all time low. Already, the BHA has laid off 38 workers and terminated Resident Service Coordinators. Resources are stretched to the breaking point. Maintenance and security could be slashed. This can’t continue.

Is there anything YOU can do about this? YES! You are invited to attend an important meeting to find out what is going on and organize to fight back.

Come to this meeting to Save Public Housing, and Save Our Section 8!
