When signing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in 2009, President Obama gave a slight boost to the SNAP (formerly food stamps) program. ARRA will sunset on November 1st of this year and will cause the 889,000 MA SNAP recipients to lose an estimated $95 million in benefits statewide, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
DTA is currently working with the Food SNAP Coalition, Project Bread and others to determine the best way to get this critical information into the hands of recipients to prepare them for these cuts, and where possible, work with recipients to lessen the impact of the cuts. Some families may not be aware that they are eligible for certain income deductions as they apply to recertify for benefits.
